WHAT IS ‘THE AGE OF DISCOVERY’?

This Is What We Believe:

You may have heard Emeka discuss on numerous occasions: The Age Of Discovery. Here’s a breakdown of what his concept ‘The Age Of Discovery’ really means. Are you in that age?

“A historical era also known as a historical period is a period of time that has been classified specifically because of commonalities within that time frame” - study.com

An era/age is a period of time that has been classified as such because of the commonalities within that timeframe; this forms the foundation of Emeka’s concept. Emeka believes each human enters their age of discovery between 18-26, a time in which children transition to adults, a time where children get out of the habits that they formed in their youth which were largely shaped by their monotonous environment. In this time we all did a lot of things we shouldn’t have done to impress people we didn’t even like. We were naïve, we were kids.

The age of discovery is about the commonality of the human experience, leaving your youth behind and discovering who you want to be, what values you want to uphold, and the direction with which you believe you want to take your life. It’s a coming of age, the unlocking of new freedoms, and the first chance of really taking ownership in regards to the setting the tone of your world. What do you become, well now you decide. No longer bound (as much) by parents, friends and family, free from the routine of school, the world is now your oyster; your decisions now your own.

A time in which you (hopefully) mature, grow, develop. This is the age of discovery. A new chapter.

But why does the age of discovery matter?

It matters because it’s a tough period. We need to be patient with ourselves in this period as we learn new habits, discover ourselves, and look to cement our place in the world. We need to allow for mistakes in this age; it can be extremely hard to do so with the rise of social media and with that the ever increasing opportunities to compare yourself to others and be left feeling behind.

Your journey is your own and it’s vital to remember that on this path.

It’s in this time that making mistakes, rather than avoid mistakes, is what’s going to teach us the most. It’s important that in the age of discovery we take time to reflect on how we’ve behaved, and how it’s affected the people around us, this is where the growth happens.

It’s easy to feel in this time that we’re being out-shone by our peers, underachieving etc, but it’s incredibly important to remember that our journey is our own, our destination unique. Where your train track leads may take longer to get there, but the destination is the one that ultimately you’ll be required to love the most, because it’s yours and no-one else’s.

Though the path forward may scare, the path it will prepare.

Let’s learn in this age to be grateful, to be patient, to love and respect ourselves. This age by no means is easy, and can often feel alone. The lesson we must learn is to take it one day at a time, and to learn.

Maximise your opportunities, push yourself and believe. Discover your limits, take calculated risks, the life you want is within reach.
